PoE and landline

1995.2 VOCALTEC ISRAEL Launches “IP Phone 1.0”, the world’s first Internet voice transmission software, was born. IP telephony is arguably the forerunner of modern IP telephony. In 1996.7, IDT released Net2phone, a one-person Beta that gave birth to the world’s first dial-up VOIP phone; (Index:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VoIP_phone) and coincidentally, the cradle of PoE technology is also Israel. Is it just a coincidence that the global adoption of PoE is also in the US? No! We all know very well that the use of analog telephones has long been free from the limitations of local power usage and that telephone lines can move telephones anywhere that telephone lines can reach. So, how is the power collection from the telephone done? A stored program controls the switch powered by a pulse current, triggered by off-line and incoming signals, providing a pulse current of no more than 110V. The telephone’s fixed-line is stabilized to about 20V after a short period of the startup. Provide the necessary power for the regular operation of the telephone set. When VoIP is widely used, the biggest obstacle to promoting and using VOIP is the problem of power acquisition for VOIP.

PoE and Stored program control exchange

An analog phone system can use Stored program control exchange to communicate with a phone line while still providing power. WHY NOT VOIP? The analog telephone adopts the RJ11 interface, which assumes a telephone line, and only a two-core cable was used for communication and power supply. The network telephone takes the RJ45 interface, which adopts Ethernet twisted pair cable and has 4-core / 8-core cable. Why not use telephone lines to supply power to VOIP and communicate? So the prototype of PoE was born, based on the Ethernet communication architecture without any change, under the premise of satisfying the communication demand, the technology and product of providing DC power supply at the same time were born with the application VoIP. This technology is called Ethernet-based power supply technology, or PoE for short.

PoE and the Electronics Industry Association

In the ’80s of the last century, PoE products came into people’s lives with the extensive application of VoIP as a PoE power supply, especially in Europe and America. However, PoE technology only exists in various IP technology manufacturers, and there are many differences between PoE products and IP phones, which brings great inconvenience to users. PoE’s demand for standardization became more and more intense. At that time, IP technology was advanced by many manufacturers (3Com, Intel, PowerDsine, Huawei, Advantech, Nortel, Mindy, National Semiconductor, etc.) (Index: IEEE 802.3 AF International Standard.) In 1999, IEEE International Electronics Industry Association organized leading manufacturers of IP technology to break their technical barriers. Incorporate various PoE technologies and different complex PoE products into the IEEE Electronics Industry Association’s technology library. The first PoE International Standard IEEE802.3 AF, mainly for Internet phone applications, was issued under the Anticipating. The birth of this technical standard completely activated the universal use of PoE. It broke the boundary of PoE plant and even national boundary ultimately, made PoE power supply products and made PoE switch, network management PoE switch, and Industrial PoE switch step by step onto the stage of IP history.
