Do you have a gigabit network adapter? Sometimes, you try to achieve 1 Gbps, but the speed doesn’t exceed 100 Mbps. Do you know why it happens? You have Fast Ethernet that supports no more than 100 Mbps. One crucial question is how I check whether my network adapter supports gigabit Ethernet. If the same question is in your mind, this guide is for you.

This guide will explain two methods to determine whether your device supports a Gigabit network.

Two Methods to Check Network Adapter

You must determine the Ethernet device model to demonstrate how much speed your network connection supports. Even if you apply this concept to your WiFi, the device shows the maximum speed by having a label on it.

However, I have listed two methods to show the data speed status by checking the model of your computer device.

Method 1: The name and Model of the Ethernet

Most Ethernet devices have the details written on them. This detail indicates whether they are Gigabit Ethernet or Fast Ethernet.

For example, if your device supports a Gigabit network, it will show Gigabit, GBE, 10/100/1000M Gigabit; otherwise, Fast Ethernet symbols include 10/100FE.

But the question is—How do you know the name and model number of the Ethernet device? Here are four steps to determine the Ethernet network support.

This method operates on Windows Devices such as Windows 10.

Step 1:

Scroll your mouse cursor to This PC and right-click. Head over to Manage and click it.

Step 2:

It will open several options to check out the details. You can move to the Device Manager.

Step 3:

Once you click Device Manager, move your mouse cursor to the Network Adapters.

Step 4:

The network adapters support several different protocols and device statuses. If the connections support 1.0 Gbps speed or more, the Gbe will be written. On the contrary, you will see the symbols of Fast Ethernet offering 100 Mbps and 10 Mbps.

If this process does not work out for your Gigabit Ethernet speed checkup, you can try the second by demonstrating the properties of your Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

Method 2: Determine Network Adapter Properties

Another method exists if the above method does not determine whether your devices support Gigabit Speeds. Here are some steps to help you explore the technique and get the accurate maximum speed in the control panel.

Step 1:

Follow all the above steps of Method 1.

Step 2:

In the Network Adapters, you can check the device name.

Step 3:

Hover to the device name and right-click. Now, you can click on Properties to get details.

Step 4:

Now, you can choose the Speed & Duplex to check the connection speed. If it shows 1.0 Gbps or 1000 Mbps, the maximum support for Ethernet ports is Gigabit Ethernet. Sometimes, you can find 100 or 10 Mbps, indicating you can only operate the Fast Ethernet.

This method is also popular among IT professionals and Enterprises to determine the maximum speed of their devices.

Final Words:

Have you purchased the Gigabit Ethernet? If yes, you can try both methods to determine if there is a contrast in Gigabit Ethernet speed or not. If your Ethernet network is capable of Gigabits, you can enjoy the maximum speed of one gigabyte.
