PoE++, also called PoE 802.3bt, offers a maximum power of 100 watts. The power from the power supply is 100 watts, while available to the device is 71 watts. The scenario is not as simple as you can see because there are two versions of PoE++. So, go through the guide to get a comprehensive power analysis from PoE++.

Do you know what PoE is? PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. That means you need to use the Ethernet ports to get the power supply. It can provide you with power and get a high data speed connection over the same Ethernet port. Amazing, right? There are many more benefits of Power over Ethernet. Have a look at them: What Are the Benefits of Using a PoE Switch?

What are the PoE standards?

Before I jump directly to PoE++, you must know what precisely the PoE standards are. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering developed the first PoE standard in 2003. Nowadays, they have upgraded PoE technology with four PoE standards. Here are these.

  • PoE 802.3af (Type 1)— 2003
  • PoE 802.3at (Type 2)— 2009
  • PoE 802.3bt (Type 3)— 2018
  • PoE 802.3bt (Type 4)— 2018

We call PoE 802.3af as PoE, while PoE+ refers to IEEE 802.3at. If I talk about PoE++, what would be your suggestions? I think PoE 802.3bt (Type 3), right? You are somewhat right, but we also call Type 4— PoE++. So, two versions, one name. Now, it will be easy to understand the PoE++, its power range, and relevant aspects.

What is PoE++?

PoE++ is Power over Ethernet technology that employs the IEEE 802.3bt standard. You can get the power supply and data connection over the Ethernet port while utilizing the PoE++.

As mentioned above, there are two versions of PoE++.

  • IEEE 802.3bt (Type 3)
  • IEEE 802.3bt (Type 4)

IEEE upgraded the PoE 802.3at in 2018 and introduced PoE++. This was a revolution in PoE technology because it was high-power and data-compatible.

How does PoE++ work?

I suppose you know how PoE++ works. Can you tell me how does it work? Simply, it works on the principles defined by the IEEE 802.3bt standard. Relying on this standard, it can enable 100 Watts of power to the power device with a high-speed data connection of up to 100 GB per second over a Cat8 cable. Incredible!

How many watts is PoE++?

Here we are. Our main question is not as simple as it seems to be. Since there are two versions of PoE++, the power supply to the device is different. So, let me list the power supply of both versions.

  • IEEE 802.3bt Type 3 offers 60 watts of maximum power per port, while 51 watts are available to the power device.
  • IEEE 802.3bt Type 4 facilities 100 watts of maximum power per port, while 71.3 watts is available to power the device.

So, you can understand the concepts of PoE++ power in this way.

What are the features of PoE++?

PoE++ offers numerous other features. Whether you are using PoE type 3 or 4 depends on the type. Here are some of the features you can get from PoE++.

Power

In PoE type 3, the power from the power supply is 60 watts, while at the power device, it is 51 watts. In the case of PoE type 4, you can observe a bit of high power compatibility. The power from the power supply is 100 watts while available at the power device is 71 watts.

Voltage

The voltage range at the power supply in type 3 is 50-57 volts, while in type 4, it is 52-57 volts. The voltage range available at the power device is 42.5-57 volts and 41.1-57 volts, respectively.

Current

The maximum current is 600 milliamperes in PoE type 3 while 900 milliamperes in PoE type 4 per port.

Ethernet Cabling

Whether you are using Type 3 or Type 4 PoE, the Ethernet compatibility is the same. You need to employ a minimum of Category 5 Ethernet port.

What are the advantages of PoE++?

PoE++ is the best PoE available today. Maybe you have another upgrade, but it is enough for data speed and power supply. However, it comes with the following benefits.

PoE++ is compatible with high-power devices.

  • In 2003, PoE 802.3af was incompatible with high-power devices such as laptops and relevant devices. This PoE standard only delivered power up to 15.40 watts. Later, with the introduction of PoE++ in 2018, you can also empower your high-power devices. You can get up to 100 watts for your devices. Isn’t it sufficient yet?

You can get high-speed data up to 100GBs per second.

  • At data-intensive units, can you guess the main problem? Relatively easy to guess—High-speed internet! Do you know why? Because they need to manage the data and require high-speed data to transfer and store the vast files. Is the fast Ethernet still effective in such a case? Never! PoE++ can provide data speed up to 100GBs per second. Just imagine 100 Gigabytes per second. You can transfer the gigabytes of files within milliseconds. Just incredible!

Buildings already have the built-in system for PoE.

  • There is no need to employ a unique mechanism for installing PoE technology. Most buildings already have pre-built PoE systems. You need to add PoE switches to your network. That’s all. If the system is compatible with PoE, the devices will get the power supply and data over the Ethernet cable. That means you can save the deployment cost of your PoE network.

PoE++ provides ultimate security to keep hackers away.

  • Do you need a safe data connection? Operate the PoE technology. PoE++ employs various security layers to keep hackers away. It reduces the risks of cyber-attacks and provides you with a safe data connection. Security protocols such as SSL, SSH, and RADIUS are part of the security system of PoE++.

Where do I use the PoE++?

PoE++ is great for heavy traffic networks and enables high data speed. Depending on its high power and data speed features, it can be applied in the following areas.

  • In video conferencing equipment that requires a high power supply, we use the PoE++ technology.
  • Laptops, flat screens, and other high-power devices employ the PoE++ technology.
  • At data centers, you can observe the practice of PoE++ switches for high-speed data.
  • In radio wireless access points, you can discern the phenomenon of PoE++ technology.
