Aging Test

After assembling, the POE switch would go through 4 hours of aging, the defective switch would be returned, and qualified products would undergo subsequent testing.

RFC2544 Test

Each network switch will go through an RFC2544 examination after 4 hours of aging. The RFC2544 network test includes six parts: Throughput, Delay, Frame loss, back-to-back, system reset, and system recovery. The network switch would flow to the following procedure after passing the six tests.

PoE (Power over Ethernet) is defined as using an existing Ethernet cat-5 cabling infrastructure without any changes. It can provide DC power supply technology for such devices as IP phones, Wireless LAN AP, network cameras, etc… as well as transmit data signal for a Poe. Poe is also called a Pol (power over LAN) or active Ethernet (Active Ethernet), sometimes referred to as a Power over Ethernet. It is the latest standard specification for the simultaneous transmission of data and electrical power using existing standard Ethernet transmission cables and maintains compatibility with existing Ethernet systems and users.

  1. POE only needs to install a cable, which is space-saving and straightforward, and the equipment can be moved at will.
  2. Cost savings. Many PD, such as video surveillance cameras, need to be installed where AC power is difficult to deploy. POE saves power and time to establish power.
  3. Power Supply Intelligence, DC power as data transmission, PoE can use a simple network management protocol (SNMP) to monitor and control the device.
  4. POE power supply end device will only power the device that needs power. The Ethernet cable will only have voltage present if the device that needs emphasis is connected, thus eliminating the risk of power leakage. (Security)
  5. A single UPS can provide power to all devices involved in a power failure. (Centralized power supply)
  6. Users can seamlessly mix legacy and POE devices on the network, which can coexist with existing Ethernet cables.
  7. Makes network devices easy to manage. Because when the remote devices connect to the network, they can only control them, rewire, or reset remotely.

For example, we discuss the power over Ethernet. In 2003, we compromised on the power when the 802.3af standard provided us with 15 watts of power. Only low-power devices can get the power.

With time, engineers upgraded this PoE technology. Now, we have PoE 802.3 bt that works for most devices. It doesn’t matter we have high power or low power device. PoE can work with all the devices efficiently.

Different enterprise sectors have continued to install PoE-compatible devices and infrastructure. That’s because of the increasing demand for improved network access with little or no disruption.

  1. Saving Costs

Take a look at your business. For example, do you hire professionals for electrical installations? Besides, do you pay for it quite often? With a PoE switch, you will save on such costs since you will no longer need to hire such professionals.

2. Quick/Fast Installation

PoE Switches are rapid to install. First, you need to connect the PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment) to your local PoE extender. It will provide power.

Next to connect is the networking cable. Then, use a Cat 3 or Cat 5 cable, coaxial cable, or twisted-pair cable to connect the remote and local extenders. Finally, click the network and power cables to a powered gadget/device from the remote extender.

3. Safety

Do you worry about electrical hazards? Is Power over Ethernet safe? Well, PoE switches are very safe. It is because they use pretty low voltages, thus safe.

4. Flexibility

PoE switches are very flexible. So if you are a network administrator, you can deploy the powered devices at any location.

You can also use shielded cabling in outdoor environments. But if you are thinking of industrial environments, you can use industrial-grade powered devices.

1. Cable

If your PoE switch functions well, then the Ethernet cable you are using to run your PoE-enabled device may be defective. Do not waste time twisting and stretching your cord. It will not yield much value to you. Just try to use a cable tester or replace the cable.

Suppose your device responds well after changing the cable. Then, you can eliminate two possibilities: The PoE switch and the line.

2. Device

After passing the PoE switch and cable tests, you can narrow down your options even further. The next thing that you should test is your device itself.

The easiest way to do it is by swapping the device with a similar kind of device. If the replacement works, your hunt ends here. It’s your device that is troubling you.

3. Network

Let’s say you went through all the checks mentioned above, and your device still doesn’t work. You are bound to doubt your network. Even if the internet connectivity is good, you should check with your internet service provider. Do they face any problems regarding DNS? Are there any issues that usually pop up with increasing power?

Based on their response, you can devise your strategy. Sometimes, ISPs don’t conduct a thorough review despite a request from you. Sometimes, your ISP claims that everything is okay from their end, but the problem persists. That’s the time when you need to look beyond conventional testing methods. And go with advanced techniques of using tools like PoE splitter and Network tester.

Finding Issues Using a Network Tester

If you reach this stage, you are well placed. You successfully did manage to eliminate significant issues. When you use a tool like a network tester, you will be checking through more suitable issues.

If you are new to network testers, don’t conclude anything with the name of this tool. The tool ‘network tester’ does not only test your network. A network tester is an advanced tool that identifies issues with everything from your cable, PoE devices, PoE switches to the power source.

The PoE testers perform the following tests, if you find any anomalies, you can report them to the internet service provider.

• Continuity test of the network cable
• Power test for both AC and DC
• PoE switch test
• Power test PoE devices
• Overloading test

There are various network testers available in the market. You can even get a pocket-sized network tester.

After all the advanced tests, let’s say you find out that only your PoE switch was faulty. Then, you have two options at your disposal, either replace your PoE switch with a new one or go for repair.
